About

Joy, euphoria and Brazilian rhythms

Baquetum is Sweden’s first and largest Brazilian percussion ensemble with focus on Maracatu – a collection of rhythms originating from north-eastern Brazil.

The ensemble is based in Stockholm and was founded by Brazilian singer Elisa Sohlman and world famous percussionist Jorge Martins in 2004. Elisa had seen Jorge Martins lead the “Maracatu NY” through the streets of Manhattan, and was inspired to bring this astonishing rhythm to the cold streets of Sweden.

Today, Baquetum consists of over 40 members, mostly ladies, with a wide range of different nationalities. The group is musically directed by percussionist Michel Reisler with the assistance of percussionist David Stenson.

The musical ensemble consists of alfaias (large wooden rope-tuned drums), gonguês, agogôs (cowbells) and abês (gourd shakers enveloped in beads). A “conductor” leads the orchestra, directing choice of rhythm with the help of a caixa ( snare drum) and a whistle.

Our focus is Maracatu rhythms, but we like to spice it up with other musical elements and beats such as funk, samba and reggae. The rhythms are energetic and resemble the ones played at the carnivals in Rio de Janeiro. Few things bring such feeling of joy and euphoria as when several drums find a common rhythm, and almost intoxicate the audience.

Baquetum is often hired to perform at festivals, company happenings, nightclubs, and in parades. We have, to name a few, performed as opening act for Lenine’s concert in Stockholm, entertained at the Swedish Institute, played for Amnesty, been hired by Musikmuseet for parade and live music act, and have also participated in the the Pride Parade in Stockholm for several years.

We also arrange workshops every now and then for people who are interested in learning more about Maracatu.
